Have you ever heard a Lebanese talk? “Hi, kifak,ça va?”

A simple greeting sentence that we use every day and yet it holds three languages. Hi (English), Kifak (How are you in Arabic), ça va (French). We mix three languages in one single sentence because according to social norms today speaking purely Arabic means that you are démodé- out of style. I find this fascinating! I could have chosen to study French or English literature since we, Lebanese, are proud of being multicultural. However, I chose the least appealing major amongst my generation, so I can learn more about what my grade 9 teacher instilled in us: the beauty of the Arabic language”-Mireille Maalouf
